Best quake 4 mods purple pixels11/20/2023 i bought it on the day it came out - and it just didn't match up to others. Hopefully it keeps up the tempo until the end. Still, so far this game beats most shooters I've played - Half Life, Killzone, Halo, Bioshock, CoD, Far Cry and many others fall to this early attempt at a full 3d fps that ends up being right on the money. They could work as a rare miniboss, but they just don't quite play well with regular levels a lot of the time. It has a short windup so it's totally dodgeable, but you need cover to protect yourself from it and the way these guys are placed in levels just doesn't reflect that sometimes. These are the tankiest monsters in the game and deal tons of damage, but their attack is a hitscan. There are some small issues - movement has a bit too much inertia, the weapon and enemy variety is lacking, enemies don't make enough noises for my taste - but the one big problem is an enemy type called Shamblers. The combat is infinitely better than classic Doom for my taste because there aren't as many hitscan enemies around, the game actually gives you room to maneuver around projectiles, enemies are more interesting and have clearer animations, and it generally just doesn't feel like combat is just there to check if you have enough resources to get through an encounter, which is how I kinda felt in Doom. The environments are more varied than Quake 2 and thus easier to navigate, at least in my opinion. I've gotten through the first two episodes and change so far and it's all superb.
